Ulladulla youth help paint stunning collaborative mural: 2025 NAIDOC Art Project
One hundred local First Nations students were invited to take part in an art workshop with Leanne Brook to paint a mural to be used as the design for NAIDOC 2025 polo shirts, as part of ngulla NAIDOC Festival celebrations that celebrated ‘The Next Generation".
Students made their mark on the artwork by placing a thumb print on the design. “It is a simple way to allow many people to take part in an Aboriginal art workshop to create a maximum effect”, said Murramarang artist Leanne Brook, from the Ulladulla Local Aboriginal Land Council and ngulla NAIDOC Festival, who led the 2025 NAIDOC youth Aboriginal art workshops. “Whilst painting we discussed the NAIDOC theme and how our painting related to it.”
The 2025 theme “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision, Legacy” celebrates not only the achievements of the past but the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors.
Artwork features:
Ancient rainbow of knowledge pours from our ancestors and is passed down through the generations. You can see, feel and hear it in our stories, songs and embedded in Country.
The knowledge flows through the air and is captured by a guardian tree which stores the knowledge within her roots. Families gather at the foot of didthul to learn from Country and kin.
13 Tribes of the Yuin nation are represented by the wambaara and her 13 footprints.
Giriwa/ burnaaga (goanna) watches over as the totem of the Murramarang people. Gugug (owl) was Uncle Fred Carriage's totem. He soars over, reminding us that our Elders are always here watching over and providing guidance to the next generation of leaders
